In addition to conventional machining, Lindsay Machine Works provides 3, 4 & 5-axis CNC machining. 5-axis machining is ideal for manufacturing parts with complex curves and non-linear design features.
Typically, a 3-axis machining action includes an x, y & z axis for horizontal, vertical and depth of movement permitting 3 dimensional machining. The 5-axis machine allows for X, Y, and Z – or, rotational movement around and parallel to the x, y and z axes. This rotational movement allows the tool to slant from side to side while moving. 5-axis machining allows for tighter tolerance of more intricate design patterns.
Simultaneous 5-axis machining is required to manufacture impellers, in addition to other complex curved and/or tight tolerance multi-sided parts. However, 5-sided machining (also called 3+2) can save time and money.
